Martvili Canyon: choose between the riverside walk and boat route
Compare the Dadiani historical path with the separate Abasha River boat service, whose operation depends on conditions.

Martvili Canyon has two different visitor experiences: a short paved circuit above the river and a separate boat route on the Abasha. The Agency’s site describes both, while the tourism authority connects the walking route with the historic Dadiani path. Decide which experience matters to you before you arrive. A boat option is not a substitute for the walk, and the two services have different weather and operating considerations.
The walk follows the historic path
The Agency describes a circular path that begins near the visitor centre and passes two bridges, three viewing platforms and a staircase built from limestone boulders. Georgia Travel explains the Dadiani walkway as a historical route associated with the family who ruled Samegrelo. On foot, the visit lets you move between forest, stonework and river views at your own pace. Stay on the established route and follow the protected-area rules for the platforms and bridges.
The boat follows a separate section of river
The APA page lists a boat service on the Abasha River. Its safety notices tie boat operation to weather and river conditions. Check the current service status, boarding arrangements and requirements directly with the visitor centre. Do not assume a boat will run because it appears in a destination guide, and do not count on it as the only way to experience the canyon.
Match the format to your visit
Choose the walking circuit if you want the Dadiani path, platforms and limestone details. Ask about the boat if you want a water-level view and the river section is open. If you have mobility or access questions, ask the venue about surfaces, stairs and boarding before travelling; the official pages do not promise that every part suits every visitor.
Keep nearby sites separate
Martvili, Okatse and other Imereti or Samegrelo attractions are often grouped in travel itineraries, but each has a different route and visitor arrangements. Check the exact location, transfer and current access for each before combining them. This page does not estimate driving time or guarantee a multi-stop day. A focused visit to the canyon leaves more room to respond to conditions and enjoy the place rather than rushing between check-ins.
- Check the APA notice for weather-related boat restrictions.
- Confirm whether the path or boat service has any current limits.
- Follow the posted rules on the bridges, platforms and river route.
- Use the operator’s current visitor page for ticket and access details.
