Western Georgia: choose Imereti, Samegrelo or Guria
Choose a western Georgia base by the journey you want: Imereti's cultural sites and caves, Samegrelo's Zugdidi and wetlands, or Guria's town, tea and coast.

Western Georgia is not one interchangeable coastal trip. Imereti, Samegrelo and Guria put different things within reach, and the right base depends on what you want to spend time doing. Kutaisi makes sense for a city-led visit to Imereti's monuments and caves. Zugdidi puts the Dadiani complex and a wider Samegrelo route in focus. Ozurgeti is a useful town anchor for Guria's museums, food, tea and separate choices of coast or uplands. Decide on the anchor first, then build outward. A long list of distant stops hides the time needed at each one.
Imereti: use Kutaisi for history, then choose a second subject
Kutaisi is the most legible starting point in Imereti. Its city guide connects Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery and other historical sites with a living urban centre. The regional guide adds Vani's archaeological remains and museum, Tskaltubo, and a different group of nature sites. These are distinct visits. A route devoted to medieval architecture asks different questions from one devoted to the ancient Colchian material at Vani. Do not turn both into a rushed checklist because they appear under the same regional heading.
If caves are the reason for the trip, choose the cave experience before arranging the day. Prometheus Cave offers a managed underground route near Tskaltubo. Sataplia combines cave and dinosaur-footprint material in a reserve setting. If you want to understand Tskaltubo itself, leave time for its park and resort architecture instead of treating the town as a name on the way to a cave. The tourism pages also mention mineral waters. That is destination history and context, not medical advice or evidence of a treatment benefit.
A practical Imereti sequence is a Kutaisi day, followed by one coherent outward visit: Gelati and nearby cultural sites, the Tskaltubo and cave cluster, or Vani's archaeology. Check each site's present admission and the return journey with its operator. The city's airport and its railway connection are separate arrival decisions. For a late arrival, solve the transfer and the first night's base before adding a regional outing.

Samegrelo: start in Zugdidi, then pick culture or water
Samegrelo is the lowland and coastal part of the wider Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti administrative region. The official regional page treats Zugdidi and Mestia as centres of different historical areas. Do not fold an Upper Svaneti mountain trip into a short Samegrelo day. From Zugdidi, begin with the Dadiani Palace and the adjacent botanical garden. The palace holds the region's princely history, while the garden gives the same city visit a landscape component. They are neighbours, but their admission and access should be checked separately.
For a second Samegrelo theme, choose between inland water and the Black Sea lowlands. Martvili Canyon has a managed riverside and boat visit, subject to the protected area's current rules and conditions. Kolkheti National Park is a wetland landscape around Paliastomi Lake, where the route and departure point matter more than the word 'park' on a map. Poti is a useful geographic reference for Kolkheti, while Anaklia offers a coastal alternative from the Zugdidi side. A shoreline plan is different from a protected-area water route. Decide which one you mean before arranging transport.
Food makes Samegrelo distinct even on a city-centred day. Georgia Travel names elarji, gebzhalia, ajika and Megrelian khachapuri in Zugdidi. Use those as a way to choose a meal, not as a promise that every restaurant serves every dish. If you continue north toward Zemo Svaneti, plan that as a new leg with its own road and accommodation checks. The regional title covers both areas, but it does not make their experiences interchangeable.

Guria: use Ozurgeti to choose between town, coast and uplands
Guria is smaller than the other two regions, but a Guria trip still needs a choice of direction. Ozurgeti has a history museum, a fine art centre and a theatre, making it a useful base if you want the region's cultural record in view. Its museum collections link the area to archaeology and later local history. A town day can pair those sites with Gurian food and tea, but current opening arrangements belong to each venue, not to a regional overview.
The coastal names Ureki, Shekvetili and Grigoleti describe a different plan. The official Guria page also names Bakhmaro and Gomismta in the mountains. Do not combine a beach stay and an upland visit simply because they share a region. Pick one landscape as the main purpose, then check the specific access and accommodation for your dates. Tourism descriptions of magnetic sand, mineral water or mountain air are not evidence of health effects. Enjoy these places as landscapes and settlements, not as a treatment plan.
Guria also has a cultural thread beyond scenery. The regional source describes wooden oda houses, local tea, Kalandoba and Gurian polyphonic singing. Those subjects reward a slower visit: a museum stop in Ozurgeti, a meal with Gurian dishes, and time to understand the tradition behind the coast or highland route you picked. A festival description is cultural context, not a dated event ticket. Confirm any performance or gathering with its organiser before travelling.

Understand Gurian Kalandoba and the winter table
The simplest decision is one base and one outward theme for each region. Kutaisi works when historical sites or caves lead. Zugdidi works when the Dadiani complex, Megrelian food or Samegrelo's waterways lead. Ozurgeti works when Gurian culture leads and you want to choose a separate coast or upland leg. If you plan to cross all three regions, give each stop a reason and confirm the connection between bases. Regional proximity on a map is not a timetable.
