A rental is most useful when your plan includes several stops, awkward connections or places beyond a station and city bus network. It adds a driver, parking, handover and return tasks to every day. Choose around the route you intend to drive, not the idea that a car automatically makes a trip easier.

Match transport to the route

Several regional stops or rural addressesA rental for the days when you need to travel between placesRoad surface, vehicle clearance, weather, daylight and each rental company's route permission
Tbilisi to Batumi, with a city stay at either endGeorgian Railway for the intercity leg, then local transport or a shorter rental if neededThe date-specific train, station transfers, luggage and what you plan to do outside each city
Several days based in TbilisiMetro and bus for city journeys, with a car only for days when the route calls for oneThe walk from your address to a stop, parking and where the rental pickup and return happen

Georgian Railway publishes Tbilisi–Batumi services. Tbilisi Transport Company describes bus and metro journey planning inside the capital. These are alternatives to compare for a specific itinerary, not a claim that every destination has a convenient public connection.

Check the named driver's eligibility

Rental conditions differ. Enterprise Georgia lists a minimum age of 21, at least one year with a driving licence, a valid passport and a credit card. RentiCar states age 21 and at least two years holding a valid licence. Geo Car states age 23 and a category B licence held for at least two years. Those examples show why a general rule for Georgia would mislead. Check the actual supplier and car before you reserve.

Read road and insurance limits together

Ask what the named insurance package covers, the excess or liability cap, and which damage is excluded. RentiCar's terms exclude cover for driving off public roads and for drivers absent from the agreement. Geo Car says routes must suit the vehicle and requires prior agreement for off-road and high-mountain roads such as Tusheti and Omalo. Georgia Travel describes the Abano Pass to Tusheti as changing from paved to dirt road and closing seasonally. A vehicle described as an SUV does not establish permission or suitability. Check current road conditions with the relevant authority before departure.

Get the handover and return details in writing

  • Which exact car, pickup address and handover time are confirmed? What happens if a flight is late?
  • Can the car be returned at a different location or outside office hours? What fee, if any, applies?
  • Which documents and licence format do you need? Are all intended drivers named in the agreement?
  • How much is the deposit, how is it held, and when and how is it released?
  • What protection is included, what is the excess, and are glass, tyres, wheels, underbody, theft and roadside assistance covered?
  • Are there mileage, fuel, border-crossing, unpaved-road or high-mountain restrictions?
  • What should you do after an accident or breakdown, and which number should you call?

At pickup, compare the contract with the car. Photograph existing marks, record the fuel level and mileage, and keep the signed handover record. Confirm any difference with staff before leaving. Do not rely on a booking summary to answer a question the contract leaves open.
