Tianeti: choose a town visit or a two-day highland route
Separate a museum or reservoir visit from the municipality's route, which starts outside Tianeti town and climbs to alpine terrain.

Tianeti is both a town and the name of a wider municipality. The Georgian National Tourism Administration describes the Local Museum and Sioni Reservoir as regional visitor interests. The municipal route starts in the Aragvispira area, outside Tianeti town.
Choose the town or reservoir for a shorter cultural outing
The regional tourism page says Tianeti Local Museum presents material from the Bronze Age through the late Middle Ages. It also describes the Iori River as feeding Sioni Reservoir, a summer recreation destination. These are different visit choices: indoor regional history in Tianeti, or a reservoir visit in the separate Sioni area. The page does not give the museum's current hours or specify which reservoir facilities are open.
Choose the walk only with a two-stage plan.
Tianeti Municipality's route starts in the Aragvispira area, in the Lower Sharakhavi valley, at 850 metres. Its first stage covers ten kilometres to summer pastures at 1,700 metres, with a recorded climb of 850 metres. The page describes a forest path and castle and church ruins on the approach. This is already a substantial first day, not an introductory stroll from town.
Read the second day by its high point and descent
The second stage continues toward Khmala Mountain, whose listed high point is 2,160 metres, then descends through forest to Bodakhevi at 1,220 metres. The municipality lists another ten kilometres. The page says the route passes summer pasture and shepherd huts, but does not confirm current overnight availability or trail condition.
Keep the choices separate
A separate heritage choice is Zhaleti Basilica
Tianeti Municipality identifies Zhaleti's three-aisled basilica, also known locally as St George's icon, on the elevated right bank of the Iori near the inundated village of Sakharaulo. The page dates the basilica to the ninth or tenth century and notes an early-medieval font decorated with relief figures. The historical description does not establish current access.
- Choose Tianeti Local Museum when the Bronze Age-to-medieval collection is your main interest.
- Choose Sioni Reservoir for a water-side recreation plan, then confirm current facilities and access locally.
- Choose the ridge route only after checking current conditions, the road approach to Aragvispira and overnight arrangements. The municipal page provides a route description, not a current service or safety notice.
