Machakhela: plan a forest route and check border-area rules
Use the park’s forest and viewpoint descriptions to choose a trail, and confirm any special permit needed for a border-area route.

Machakhela National Park offers a forested landscape in Adjara with two official hiking routes integrated with roads. The Agency describes a park dominated by forest and dense shrubs, with Colchic plant species and a visitor centre in Ach’aristskali village. Start by asking the administration which route fits your interest. The Kokoleti Trail has a border-area permit requirement that makes it a distinct planning choice.
Understand what the Kokoleti route includes
The Agency’s trail page describes Kokoleti as a route through village roads and Colchic-type forest to a viewpoint toward the Camili Biosphere Reserve and historic villages in Upper Machakhela. It also identifies camping and picnic facilities along the route. This is a specific forest and viewpoint experience, not simply a general park walk. Ask the visitor centre about the current route, return plan and any services you intend to use.
Get the permit question answered early
The Agency states that Kokoleti lies in a border zone and requires a special movement permit before the tour begins. Its visitor page says to contact park administration in advance and points to the Border Police process. Confirm the current application method, lead time, required document and whether your planned route needs the permit. Do not assume that passing an entrance checkpoint or carrying an identity document replaces permission.
Match the outing to your time
The park’s official trail index also lists an Archangel Mountain route. The subpage did not load during this check, so this guide makes no claim about its length or difficulty. Ask the administration for the current description before considering it. If the permit process or route does not fit the trip, choose a different local activity that does not enter the restricted area.
- Check which route is open and what its current starting point is.
- Ask the Agency whether your chosen trail enters a border-control zone.
- Apply for any required permit through the current official channel before travel.
- Confirm transport, return point, camping rules and weather-related changes with park staff.
Machakhela is a place where the practical rules belong in the plan from the start. The official source is specific about the Kokoleti permit, but permits and routes can change. Use the current Agency and Border Police instructions rather than relying on an old tour listing or this article for the final administrative step.
