Kobuleti: walk the Ispani peatland on its official trail
Understand Kobuleti’s sphagnum peat ecosystem and choose a designated walking route for bird and plant observation.

Kobuleti Protected Areas protect wetland habitat on the coastal plain. The Agency describes the area as important for water birds and plants, including sphagnum moss and Drosera. It is a different visit from a beach or a boat tour in Kolkheti: here the focus is peatland vegetation and the paths built through it. Choose a named route and follow the official instructions rather than walking onto the bog surface independently.
Start with the Ispani 2 trail
The Agency identifies Ispani 2 as a trail toward sphagnum domes and a bird observation point. Its page also links the area to archaeological evidence of earlier settlement. The White Moss route describes a circular path through wetland vegetation, with the protected-area narrative naming Drosera and other plant life. These routes offer a way to see the bog without treating it as open ground. Confirm which trail is currently available and the visitor-centre arrangement before setting out.
Understand why the surface matters
Sphagnum peat develops as a wetland system, not as ordinary forest floor. The protected-area pages describe domes of moss, varied vegetation and habitat for water birds. UNESCO’s Colchic Rainforests and Wetlands listing discusses the broader region’s peatland and rainforest ecosystems, including Ispani as a named component. The UNESCO listing provides conservation context; the Agency’s pages are the practical source for where visitors may walk.
Make observation the purpose
Use the trail to notice changes in plant cover, water and elevation. Bird sightings vary, so bring patience rather than a target list. If you are interested in botany or birding, ask the visitor centre about the current route, group guidance and permitted observation practices. The protected area’s strict and managed designations have different purposes, so follow the staff’s instructions about where visitors may go.
Check the right details
- Confirm the specific route name and start point with the Agency.
- Ask about current access, trail condition and whether a guide is required.
- Use the marked path and do not step onto peat domes or vegetation beyond it.
- Bring the equipment appropriate for a wetland path, and ask locally about conditions.
Kobuleti’s value is its unusual peatland system, not the distance walked. A short designated trail can still be a substantial nature visit when you slow down and pay attention to the habitat. The Agency is the source for current access and route arrangements.
