Gelati: separate the twelfth-century mosaic from later murals
Read the main church's construction, apse mosaic and wall paintings as distinct periods.

Gelati's main church, apse mosaic and mural ensemble belong to different periods. Keep the architecture and decoration on separate timelines.
Construction dates
UNESCO dates the monastery's foundation to 1106 and the main church's completion to 1130. It dates other church additions to the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. The exterior description notes large cut stone blocks, balanced proportions and blind arches.
The apse mosaic
The main church's twelfth-century apse mosaic depicts the Virgin with the Child, flanked by archangels. Keep its location and date attached to this specific work.
The mural ensemble
UNESCO dates the wall paintings to the twelfth through seventeenth centuries. The ensemble includes more than forty portraits of rulers and clergy and the earliest depiction of the Seven Ecumenical Councils. The murals span a longer period and a wider subject range than the apse mosaic.
Conservation records are not visitor notices
The official rehabilitation portal indexes dated 2025–2026 records on mosaics, murals and archaeology. Those records do not establish which artworks are visible to visitors today.
