David Gareja is a network of monasteries, not one church. UNESCO's 2007 Tentative List entry describes a mixed cultural and natural landscape. Tentative-list status is not World Heritage inscription.

Read the nomination as a landscape description

The State Party's entry describes nineteen medieval monasteries and approximately five thousand monk cells on the Iori Plateau near the Georgia–Azerbaijan border. It frames their rock-cut architecture within an arid and semi-arid landscape. These figures and descriptions are from the 2007 submission, not a new inventory of visitor-accessible sites.

Connect the network to its foundation story

Georgia Travel describes the monastic centre as founded in the first half of the sixth century by David Garejeli. Its page describes a complex extending along roughly twenty-five kilometres and mentions a water-supply system and reservoirs. These details show how the monastery network depended on more than carved worship spaces.

Use Dodo's Rka as one specific example

Georgia Travel identifies Dodo's Rka as one component of the network, founded by Dodo Garejeli. The page dates a cave painting of Christ with Georgian writing to the eighth or ninth century. It also describes later building phases. Keep this example attached to Dodo's Rka rather than projecting its dates onto every monastery in the landscape.

Do not treat the heritage entry as access advice

UNESCO's entry places the landscape near an international border and states that Tentative List publication expresses no opinion on territorial or boundary legal status. It gives no current opening, route, trail or safety information. This is heritage context only; confirm any visit question with current official Georgian authorities.
