Uplistsikhe is a rock-cut historic town about ten kilometres from Gori. The Georgian tourism authority describes a site carved into cliffs, with public spaces and structures cut into the rock. It identifies the area as a historical museum and protected area and traces its history to the late Bronze Age and later periods.
A town carved into the cliffs
The official site describes Uplistsikhe as an early settlement whose history is reflected in the rock-cut complex. It lists streets, squares, public spaces, temples, theatres, pharmacies, wine presses and cellars, as well as a tunnel linking the caves to the Mtkvari River. The tourism authority gives historical context rather than date-specific access details. Check current official information before travelling to the site.
